How to learn about Shell scripting???????SmilieSmilie

prompts more questions than answers. which shell? bash, korn, bourne, C, other?

bash is available with any Linux distro. there are Linux distros that can be booted from CD, and not have to install, and you can use this to practice bash shell scripting. there are many good O'Reilly books on shell scripting. You'll have to also learn one of the many text editors available under Unix/Linux, or use Windows notepad and learn to use ssh to transfer said script onto a Unix/Linux server.

Or just try a Google search "shell scripting"

After you have read the O'Reilly paperbacks, the Advanced bash Scripting Guide is a good read.

/ is the top directory of all the directories of the system...
/root is the home directory of root user nd /home is a directory which works under the / nd keeps the detail of users of the system bt it does nt keep the info of root user why????

In order to keep root user's stuff contained in one place and not scattered around the root of filesystem (/).
Many times it's advantageous to have /home as separate partition, either local, or mounted from a different computer, it can ease administration (e.g. upgrading distro, reformatting, etc.), whereas root user's files should be on that particular machine.
Imagine there are 10 computers around the lab/company/home. Instead of having a separate home directory on each of these machines, there is only one, storing homes of all users, and mounted on each computer, so each user has access to her stuff from each machine.

As for learning about shell scripting -- the above mentioned Advanced bash Scripting Guide is a superb learning and reference source; it has tons of examples. But most importantly, you will have to actually write scripts; since you cannot learn any language (scripting, programming, or linguistic) without the actual practice.
