Ok. If "-" should be allowed within a file name but not at the beginning, "=" occurring anywhere should be tagged as error.

Is that a question or a statement?

I am stating that "-" should be allowed within a file name but not at the beginning, whereas "=" occurring anywhere should be tagged as error.

This is what I'm trying to do.

Then I want to have Lst containing all the strings considered in error.

That'll teach me not to start reading from post #3 in a thread Smilie

Just remove the $ - my wrong assumption.

Am a bit confused about the Record Separator. What is it supposed to do?

Well, you were using tr to translate spaces into newlines.

RS in awk can do the same thing here (by using space as a record (line) separator). If you want to put the output record separator back to spaces, before the output is printed, add ORS=" " to the end.

When I remove the RS=" ", all the list is displayed. I thought it will display only the ones that match!!!
