Awk Count Pattern problem.
I want to keep a count of a all the records processed in a input file. The input file would have a lot of data containing various information. Lets say I make a pattern that only prints out data with the amount $37.57. How would I go about keeping track of how many $37.57 appears?

I have something like this. This is just the body of my awk code.

Code:
if ($1 == "37.57")
        {
        for (i=0; i<=NR; i++ )
                {
                count++
                }
        printf ("%3s\t%6.2f\n", $2, $4)
#Adds all the values in the 4th column
                total += $4
        }

Your for-loop is off by one, it should start at 1, not 0.

You're counting the columns each time something equals that value, is that really what you want to do? If you just want to count the lines you can leave off the loop around count++ and it'll give you a count of lines.
