shell script

Hi All,

I need help in unix

I have a file which can content in any order.
For example: file1.txt has:
Code:
Age|Name|Sal|Comm
21|Raj|20000|100
20|Donald|1000|0
18|Steve|80000|5000
.
.

The file can have data in any order, i.e. file1.txt can have data also as:
Code:
Sal|Age|Name|Comm
20000|21|Raj|100
1000|20|Donald|0
80000|18|Steve|5000

The file1.txt can have data in any order , the first line is header. The file1.txt data should be always in following order:
Code:
Name|Age|Sal|Comm
Raj|21|20000|100
Donald|20|1000|0
Steve|18|80000|5000

Need help me in this urgently.
Thanks for the help

Try this... May not be very efficient but does the job... Enhance it further for more fields...

Code:
#!/bin/bash

i=0; while read line; do
  val=`echo $line | sed 's/|/ /g'`
  a[i]=`echo $val | awk '{print $1}'`
  b[i]=`echo $val | awk '{print $2}'`
  c[i]=`echo $val | awk '{print $3}'`
  ((i=i+1))
done < file

if [ ${a[0]} == "Name" ];then m=${a[*]} ;fi
if [ ${b[0]} == "Name" ];then m=${b[*]} ;fi
if [ ${c[0]} == "Name" ];then m=${c[*]} ;fi
if [ ${a[0]} == "Age" ];then n=${a[*]} ;fi
if [ ${b[0]} == "Age" ];then n=${b[*]} ;fi
if [ ${c[0]} == "Age" ];then n=${c[*]} ;fi
if [ ${a[0]} == "Sal" ];then o=${a[*]} ;fi
if [ ${b[0]} == "Sal" ];then o=${b[*]} ;fi
if [ ${c[0]} == "Sal" ];then o=${c[*]} ;fi

j=0; for i in $m;do a[$j]=$i;((j=j+1)); done
j=0; for i in $n;do b[$j]=$i;((j=j+1)); done
j=0; for i in $o;do c[$j]=$i;((j=j+1)); done

for((i=0;i<j;i++));do echo "${a[i]}|${b[i]}|${c[i]}"; done

regards,
Ahamed

This will work no matter what order the columns are in in the input file:
Code:
{
 IFS=\| read f1 f2 f3 f4

case $f1 in
  Sal) sal=1 ;;  Age) age=1 ;;  Name) name=1  ;;  Comm) comm=1 ;;
esac
case $f2 in
  Sal) sal=2 ;;  Age) age=2 ;;  Name) name=2  ;;  Comm) comm=2 ;;
esac
case $f3 in
  Sal) sal=3 ;;  Age) age=3 ;;  Name) name=3  ;;  Comm) comm=3 ;;
esac
case $f4 in
  Sal) sal=4 ;;  Age) age=4 ;;  Name) name=4  ;;  Comm) comm=4 ;;
esac

printf '%s|%s|%s|%s\n' Name Age Sal Comm

awk -F \| -v OFS=\| -v sal=$sal -v age=$age -v name=$name -v comm=$comm '
  { print $name, $age, $sal, $comm  }
'
} < "$file"

The output order can easily be changed by re-ordering the print line in the awk script.

Code:
#! /usr/bin/perl

use strict;
use warnings;

open (my $data, '<', $ARGV[0])|| die "Can't open file \"$ARGV[0]\"\n\t$!";
my (@records);
chomp(my $header = readline($data));
my @headers = split(/\|/,$header);
while(<$data>){
    my %fields;
    chomp;
    @fields{@headers} = split (/\|/,$_);
    push @records ,\%fields;
}

for my $record (@records){
    print "$record->{Name} is $record->{Age} years old and earns $record->{Sal} per annum with an additional $record->{Comm} in commission\n";
}

The above uses a hash slice to save each record as an indexed hash into an array.
If the file size is very large this could be a memory hog, however if not it should offer maximum flexibility.

Or for maximum confusion with minimum maintainability run the following on the command line Smilie
Code:
perl -e 'while(<>){my%f;chomp;if(defined @h){@f{@h}=split/\|/;push @r, \%f;}else{@h=split/\|/;}}for(@r){print "$_->{Name} is $_->{Age}, earns $_->{Sal} plus$_->{Comm} in commision.\n";}' file1.txt

Assuming the Input file has the order:

Age|Name|Sal|Comm

Code:

awk -F "|" 'BEGIN {OFS = FS} {print $2,$1,$3,$4}' file1.txt

will give output in order : Name|Age|Sal|Comm

You can always change the order of headers by simply changing its order in the code where $2 corresponds to second column and so on.
