which shell are you using?

if your shell is bash can you post the output of
Code:
bash -x ./count <whatever directory>

or if ksh

Code:
ksh -x ./count <whatever directory>

Thank you very much Ahmed for help me :

I found this code :

Code:

#!/bin/bash
FILE="/tmp/count.txt"
ls -l $1 > $FILE
echo " count : $(grep ^- $FILE -c) "
rm -f  $FILE

it worked .. but it counts the files with the hidden ones , I just want it to count the regular files ..

mmm good... but its still a mystery why the other code didn't work...
anyways, its strange that it counts hidden files also...

below should give only normal files.
Code:
ls -l

For listing hidden files "-a" option should be used
Code:
ls -la

But still you have the issue of finding the size. Try if this works

Code:
#!/bin/bash
FILE="/tmp/count.txt"
ls -l $1 > $FILE
echo " count : $(grep ^- $FILE -c) "
awk '/^-/ {x=x+$5} END{print "Size:" x}' $FILE
rm -f  $FILE

Ahamed
