sed

hello,

I am trying to replace a field with a variable value,

Code:
     <location province="aaa" area="bbb" street="my-street;india" zipcode="ddd">
     </location>
     <interest fld1="aaa" fld2="bbb" fld3="ccc" fld4="ddd" />
     <interest fld1="aaa" fld2="bbb" fld3="ccc" fld4="ddd" />

Code:
     <location province="aaa" area="bbb" street="1-24;india" zipcode="ddd">
     </location>
     <interest fld1="aaa" fld2="bbb" fld3="ccc" fld4="ddd" />
     <interest fld1="aaa" fld2="bbb" fld3="ccc" fld4="ddd" />

wondering how can I achieve with sed, basically I am after updating street with different values passed from an input file...

appreciate the help

Based on your input.

Code:

val="1-24;india"

sed -e '/street/ s/\(.*street=\).* \(.*\)/\1'\"$val\"' \2/' input_file

or

val='"1-24;india"'

sed -e '/street/ s/\(.*street=\).* \(.*\)/\1'$val' \2/' input_file

Code:
v=my_newstreet
sed "s/street=\"[^;]*;/street=\"$v;/" infile

Code:
# v=new_street
# echo '<location province="aaa" area="bbb" street="my-street;india" zipcode="ddd">' | sed "s/street=\"[^;]*;/street=\"$v;/"
<location province="aaa" area="bbb" street="new_street;india" zipcode="ddd">
