Question rename file on a different server

Hello Every One.

I am trying to put a timestemp file to a sever with extention file*.ia ( file*.ia is a time stemp and compress file ).

Then rename it into file*.gz.

My .netrc contant are :

machine xxxx login xxxx password xxxx macdef init
lcd /test/system
cd /infolder
ascii
prompt
put file*.ia
rename file*.ia file*.gz
bye

but my .netrc is unable to rename the file. And the resion i belive is the wiled card. It has to be a full name.

Can some one direct me to the right direction.

I am very new in UNIX.

Thanks

If there is only one file*.ia, then get the complete name and rename it when putting it onto the other server:

put file123.ia file123.gz

I answer the question this way since put with wildcards will only put one file. If you need to send multiple files, mput (although that won't help your situation).

So write a script to be run - have it find all the files (if more than one as stated above) and do one at a time with the put command (use a loop). Then you can put file123.ia to file123.gz, file345.ia to file345.gz.
