Help looping through files, please...

Okay...

I've solved one problem.

Here's the next.

I'm writing a script file that needs to go through a directory and list all files in that directory.

I'm using TCL/TK.

I figured out how to go through the directory and how to loop through it, but I ran into a little problem.

Example:

Say you have a top most directory called:

dir_A

Within dir_A there are some files:

dir_A
- file1
- file2

To loop through in TCL/TK i'd do this:

set files [glob -nocomplain *] #basically an ls unix call

if { $files != "" } {
foreach filename $files {
puts $filename #print to screen
}
}

That works if the directory structure has only one directory with files in it.

BUT what if the structure looks like this:

dir_A
- file1
- file2
- dir_B
- file1
- file2

The above code snippet would only print to screen:

% dir_A
% file1
% file2
% dir_B

I would like to be able to print out what is also in dir_B so that the output would be:

% dir_A
% file1
% file2
% dir_B
% file1
% file2

Any ideas?

Threw this together this afternoon. A bit scrappy but it'll do what you want - and that is recursion.

Code:
#!/usr/bin/tclsh

set files [glob -nocomplain *]
set depth 0
set foo 0

proc runsearch { file depth } {
   set depth [ expr $depth + 1 ]
   set pwd [pwd]
   cd $file
   set pre [ string repeat "|  " $depth ]
   set pre "$pre|-"
   set dirpre [ string repeat "|  " [ expr $depth - 1 ] ]
   set dirpre "$dirpre|-"
   puts "$dirpre$file/"
   set morefiles [glob -nocomplain *]
   foreach filename $morefiles {
     if { $filename != "" } {
       if [ file isdirectory $filename ] {
         runsearch $filename $depth
       } else {
       puts "$pre$filename"
      }
    }
  }
  cd $pwd
  set depth [ expr $depth - 1 ]
}

foreach filename $files {
  if { $filename != "" } {
    set pre [ string repeat "|  " $depth ]
    set pre "$pre|-"
     if [ file isdirectory $filename ] {
       runsearch $filename $depth
    } else {
       puts "$pre$filename"
    }
  }
}

It should get you started.

EDIT: Playing with the code, I implemented a basic tree-type format. I quite like this script now!

Cheers
ZB

Thanks for the code...

I was playing around on my own and think I found ANOTHER solution to the above problem.

All I had to do was build a list of files in a source directory.

I started reading about the "exec" and "eval" commands in TCL/TK.

I should have thought about this sooner, but I didn't.

I did this:

set SOURCE "/some/directory"

set expand_dir_command { ls -R $SOURCE}
set files [ $expand_dir_command ]

foreach filename $files {
puts $filename
}
