Escaping special characters

I'm attempting a little hack to get grep to highlight (change foreground color to red) a found string. Assuming a target file "test" consisting of the word "albert":

My executable "algrep" consists of this:
Code:
grep $1 $2 | sed "s/$1/\\\033[7m$1\\\033[0m/g"

And when run:
Code:
algrep al test

Produces this:
Code:
\033[7mal\033[0mbert

But how do I get the color stuff to actually work?

Thanks in advance,
Al

How about this:

Code:
Ron=$(printf "\033[7m")
Roff=$(printf "\033[0m")
grep $1 $2 | sed "s/$1/${Ron}$1${Roff}/g"

or, for support of a large number of different terminal types:
Code:
grep $1 $2 | sed "s/$1/$(tput rev)$1$(tput sgr0)/g"

Note: gnu grep has something similar with the --color=always option
