joeyg, what does the '6' in your code do? If I were to add a few columns of numbers onto each line after the 4 that currently exist, would this number need to change?

The NF inside awk counts the number of fields.
So, if your datafile has more columns, than that number would need to be adjusted.
Make sense?

Thanks guys I believe it does exactly what I'm after if I set the NF number to 15. I'll try on much more data too!

Alternatively, if the infile is tab delimited:
Code:
awk -F'\t' '{gsub(/ /,x,$3)}1' OFS='\t' infile

otherwise:
Code:
awk '{for(i=4;i<=NF-4;i++){$3=$3$i;$i=x}$0=$0}$1=$1' OFS="\t" infile

try:
Code:
awk '{for(i=1;i<=NF;i++){printf ((i>=3 && i<NF-4)?$i:$i" ")}print ""}' urfile
