Shell Programming and Scripting

does anyone know what is wrong with this script? I just started using a unix system so please bear with me .. Thanks

A arithmetic statement is
(( something ))

You must have double parentheses. You can put it in an if statement. You can put two of them together in an if statement with
if (( something )) && (( something else ))

but you have

if (( something ) && ( something else ))
