testing postgres connection in shell script
I have a script that does db query in postgres. I'm trying to put in some error checking in the script. I keep running into the password prompt problem where when invalid credentials/or database is put it, it would prompt me for a password which hangs the script. Is there a way that I can check for this kind of failure?
I have pgpass setup so if the crendentials/db/host are correct i will connect perfectly.

for example I have this in my script (with the wrong db), when I run this, it will prompt me for password.

query=`psql -d wrongdatabase -U user -h dbhost -c "select * from whatever;"`

Instead of prompting me for password I would like the script to just exit.

How do you test the physical network connection of an interface in solaris. I know that if you have an active connection and the cable gets yanked, you can look in the messages file to check for link failure messages. NAME

       wiki-toolkit-setupdb - Set up a database storage backend for Wiki::Toolkit.

SYNOPSIS

	 # Set up or update the storage backend, leaving any existing data
	 # intact. Useful for upgrading from old versions of Wiki::Toolkit to
	 # newer ones with more backend features.

	 wiki-toolkit-setupdb --type postgres
			      --name mywiki 
			      --user wiki  
			      --pass wiki 
			      --host 'db.example.com'

DESCRIPTION

       Takes three mandatory arguments:

       type
	   The database type.  Should be one of 'postgres', 'mysql' and 'sqlite'.

       name
	   The database name.

       user
	   The user that connects to the database. It must have permission to create and drop tables in the database.

       two optional arguments:

       pass
	   The user's database password.

       host
	   The hostname of the machine the database server is running on (omit for local databases).

       and one optional flag:

       force-preclear
	   By default, this script will leave any existing data alone.	To force that to be cleared out first, pass the "--force-preclear" flag.
