Replace value with sed

Hi,

I am trying to replace a value in the file using sed. The input file looks like

input file format:
Code:
<FileName>DWM_00000000.xml</FileName>

I have to replace 00000000 with today's date with a field containing today's date.

For example,
Code:
file_date=`date +%Y%m%d`;

ouput file format:
Code:
<FileName>DWM_20110112.xml</FileName>

I am using
Quote:
sed 's/00000000/\$file_date/g' tmp.xml > output.xml
command to get the result but it shows me the following output instead
Code:
<FileName>DWM_$file_date.xml</FileName>

.

Can someone please help me.

Thanks

Naveed

Hi.

It's because you are using single quotes:
Code:
sed ' .... '

instead of double quotes:
Code:
sed " ... "

The shell won't expand things in single quotes.
Code:
$ sed "s/00000000/$(date +%Y%m%d)/" file
input file format: <FileName>DWM_20110112.xml</FileName>
