[grep] seeking more than one word

Hello everybody,

How can I do seek several words with grep command ?
I didn't find how to do that in the man for I'm French.
Then I tried
Code:
man bash | grep -in control flow

But flow is interpreted as an input file
Then I tried
Code:
man bash | grep -in "control" -a "flow"

but doesn't seem to work

What the right method for my issue ?

thanks a lot

Code:
grep -e 'first word or phrase' -e 'next' -e 'last' filename

Surround the pattern you are looking for with ' ', that lets you have spaces and tabs in the pattern. It also allows you to use a feature called regular expressions. Which is far beyond what we can show you here. grep -e 'pattern1' -e 'pattern2'
is the general format you want. It means find any or all of the patterns.

Thanks jim,

problem solved, but let's assume i'm using a variable in the pattern which would be

Code:
grep -e 'file$1' filename

$1 is not interpreted and remains $1 in the pattern right ?

If you want $1 to be "interpreted", put your expression in double quotes:
Code:
grep -e "file$1" filename
