Tools How to eliminate extra char?

I was trying to grep a variable with one space in my file:
questionlabel=Q1

more job.tex
Q1 pear
Q1A applie

grep -i "$questionlabel\ " job.tex > tmp

But I keep getting :
Q1 and Q1A both in my tmp

Thanks!!!!

Since Q1 is in the second line, you WOULD get that also.

Change your variable to "Q1 " - then you will only get the pear line (note you have to quote it when setting the variable).

Question variable

In reality I won't know the value of my variable.

grep -i "$questionlabel\ " job.tex > tmp

Should replace the variable with a valure passed to it and add a space at the end.

Does anyone know how to do it?

I am so sorry for the trouble I made.

It turned out that this code was never runned!

Thank you for your help, RTM.

Your answer made me doubt my other code.

I've tried this on HP-UX and Linux the results are as expected. I.e.

input file contains...
Q1 pear
Q1A apple

Then at the prompt....
Code:
$ var="Q1"  # without a space
$ grep "$var\ " somefile
Q1 Pear

If this isn't working for you, try grep "$var[ ]" somefile

Cheers
