Need to access Oracle DB with shell/perl script in Unix
Hi,
We need to access Oracle DB with shell/perl script in Unix.
Is Oracle client needed in Unix for this.
I have seen threads which tell abt using SQL plus to access Oracle tables.
Can we access DB without SQL PLus installation using scripts in UNix like we access DB using jar files in Java .
Also, we need to store values read from DB columns in variables which we will use to rename files in UNix system. Is there any pointers or website which will help in writing such scripts as Iam new to shell scripts/unix.

There are also JDBC and unixODBC drivers. It's just a TCP/IP connection with an Oracle protocol running on top of the TCP/P layer, similar to Sybase, SQL Server, DB2, etc. Some RDBMS also have local access modes without TCP/IP. For Oracle, you will be connecting through a TNS Listener, which spawns a child process that makes that local access for a network client.
