Copy symbolic links from one server to another

Hello Friends,

My problem is really annoying, i need your help. Like a rookie i made a mistake and overrite /lib directory of an application to lib directory of OS! Hopefully its test system Smilie

I have transferred all the /lib directory from a same operating system of another server using scp command like below

Code:
scp -rp root@IP:/source/to/lib .

I couldnt copy the symbolic links, but surprisingly i coud keep working without a trouble happens. But I know there might be unexpected problems in future..

I would be thankfull if is there an idea to transfer every files from another server without losing symbolic links etc..

Regards

I you use cpio, symbolic links and empty dirs can be copied. Strangely, as I recall, sometimes cp -r and rcp -r use cpio, and cp -rp says it will preserve links. Breaking the compression out from the ssh2 allows more CPUs to be utilized pipeline parallel.
Code:
(
  cd head_dir
find * | cpio -oaH crc
  ) | gzip -9 | ssh2 user@host 'cd head_dir2 ; gzcat | cpio -idmH crc '

Hi DGPickett,

I have tried the code but didnt work, actually ssh part does not work, i had a different error when i tried ssh (rather than ssh2 as its not supported)

Code:
ssh root@192.168.0.46
Password:
Password:
Password:
Permission denied (gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,publickey,keyboard-interactive).

@EAGL€ - you will have to supply to root password for ssh to work.

How much ssh do you do that is not a login?

Well, try
Code:
ssh -v user@hostaddr

and then
Code:
ssh -v user@hostaddr /bin/date

to see what is failing. Or you can use what you normally connect to a remote system ... rsh or what have you ... instead of ssh or ssh2.

If this is something you will run repeatedly, have you looked at rsync?
