You seem to be writing in ksh, so could I simply suggest:-
Code:
grep "ORA-" $file|while read line
do
   myvar="$myvar;$line"
done
myvar="${myvar#;}"              # Strip leading ;
echo $myvar

Does this help, or have I missed the point?

Finally it's working (it was a weird line (ambiguous blank) in the input file ... when I copied the content to another new file it was OK ... all the scripts are working just fine now).
