Error Replace String

Dear Experts

I am creating a file using command
Code:
echo $vara > `date +"%Y%m%d`Logs.txt

this is putting following data in file
Code:
/interface/PI/Output/BPMCor_output20100303-124050-644.dat /interface/PI/Output/BPMCor_output20100303-124450-214.dat

No I need to Replace the string "/interface/PI/Output/" with a new line character and current date.
The new line character is just for foramtting purpose

I am trying the commands:
Code:
>OLD=/interface/PI/Output/
>DATA=`date`
>sed 's/$OLD/$DATA/g' `date +"%Y%m%d"`Logs.txt

but the output file is showing no change.
Please help

Sweet

Use double quotes in sed
Code:

sed "s/$OLD/$DATA/g" `date +"%Y%m%d"`Logs.txt

Looks like $OLD is not set. Make sure it has some value in it
Also pass actual file name to sed (actual value OR as a variable).
date command will give current date which will not result into the file you want to process.

Code:

sed "s/$OLD/$DATA/g" log_file

Hi

The command echo $OLD

is giving following result /interface/PI/Output/

Which means $OLD is set. The command `date +"%Y%m%d"`Logs.txt is giving me the exact name of the file.

Please help

ok. I see. It's only year, month and day so you will get same value (But only on the day when file was created)
Also OLD is having / in it and that's causing the problem.
Use # in place of /
Code:

sed "s#$OLD#$DATA#g" log_file

Hi

Can we insert a new line character in place of a string in a file?

I have tried the following way
Code:
v=`echo`
sed "s#$OLD#$DATA $v#g" log_file

but this has just added an extra space in the string.
Code:
sed "s#$OLD#$DATA \/n#g" log_file

but this has just added /n in the string.

Can some one help

Sweet
