If you put special characters like ^ and $ inside square brackets then grep uses their literal meaning (and in the case of ^ it becomes a negation operator if used on the first position).

-Emeans to use extended regular expression (the same as the deprecated egrep). This enables the use of alternation (the | operator).

(^|[[:space:]]) means either the beginning of the line (^) or any kind of space character.

([[:space:]]|$) means either any kind of space character or the end of the line ($).
