bash: How to send a file/directory as argument?

Hi, I'd like to make a script where I can send a directory OR files as an argument, and compress them. My proble mis, I do know how to send a directory, but I do not know what to do if there are more than 1 file, I mean I can store the directory in $1, but how do I store 4 files? must I write $1, $2, $3 , etc... ?

I hope how I explained wasn't difficult to understand Smilie

That's more up to whatever program you're using to compress them than the script. What is it?
[edit] Oh, I think I get it. Try "$@", quotes and all.

It's the tar gzip . For example, ill try to clear it up, my explanation was kinda bad:

if I write : ./compress file1 file file3 file file5

I want the script to compress all of them. But I need one variable for each of them, right? because i want those 5 files to be compressed in one.

But I know there must be a method so I only need one variable that contains the path of all the files that are sent by arguments to the script, right?

We may have crossposted. Try "$@", quotes and all, that should expand to "$1" "$2" "$3" ...
