i went with the fiollowing methof u proposed as i am not sure what are the values that come after \ symbol

now i am using

defaultStorage1=`sed 's|^/\([^/]*\)/.*|\1|' defaultStore.txt`
echo $defaultStorage1

but i the result i am getting all the other lines in the file too..along with the value that i need, i.e. like just "abc"

how can i ontain that?

pls paste some of the contents of defaultStore.txt.
