Hi All,

In following command, can someone explain in simple manner. I would really appriciate. Grep I know can be usedfor pattern recognation.

Code:
grep 'CREATE CONTROLFILE' * \ |awk -F: '{print $1}'|xargs ls -ltr

It prints the first field ($1) from a file for each line in any file that has 'CREATE CONTROLFILE' in it.

The * searches all files in the current directory.

Thanks a lot jim. If $1 would have $2 then it would print below from "create controlfile" right? also what xargs does in this case?

Not sure what does print below from "create controlfile" mean, but if it's $2 then it would print the column 2 of those files containing phrase "create controlfile" in them. The columns are determined by the field separator 'colon' : (here, in your case)
xargs helps to get the output from awk and pass it as argument to the command ls -ltr
