The echo is the trick here:

Code:
$ echo -e \\x7b\\c | hexdump -C
00000000  7b                                                |{|
00000001

And infact printf isn't needed:

$ echo -e "f0\nf1\nf2" | while read val; do     echo -e \\x$val\\c; done | dd conv=ascii 2> /dev/null ; echo
012

if he doesn't have gawk, I have my doubts he'll have echo -e.

OK, only using ksh 88 and printf (I tried this with ksh on AIX 5.3 and it works OK).

Code:
!#/bin/ksh
echo '
F0
F1
F2' | while read val
do
   printf \\$(printf %o $((16#$val)))
done | dd conv=ascii 2> /dev/null ; echo

Although this solution will work having to invoke /usr/bin/printf twice for each character isn't going to be a usable solution in anything but a trivial case.

Looks like the awk mystrnum() function or a C program are the only feasable solutions here.
