But you can just use it together with read -r, can't you? (I just offered an alternative for lettercheck and downwards)

ahh right yea u can. I thought u meant without using -r. cheers for the help. using a case does look neater imo.

Using case is the classic way of checking input format plus it is POSIX compliant...

Other readers should note: read -r is a bash-ism, it does not work in ksh88 for example.

read -r is not a bash-ism IMO Jim, since it is POSIX compliant.

Are you sure it does not work in ksh88? In the man page it says:
