grep question please
i have files with "DOMAINSOLVER ACMS" with any number of spaces in between the two words on its own line and i can find it with the following:

grep -c "DOMAINSOLVER[ \t]* ACMS" $FILENAME

but i need to exclude any lines matching: "$DOMAINSOLVER". i've tried a variety of quoting and escaping with no luck. any help would be appreciated and thanx in advance.

Is it what you need?

it's the $ that's the tricky part. i tried using several variations of the following:

grep -c "DOMAINSOLVER[ \t]* ACMS | grep -v \$DOMAINSOLVER" $FILENAME

and a multitude of different quote combinations with no luck. i think the $ can do double duty when it comes to grep. not sure though...

OR
Quote:
grep "DOMAINSOLVER[ \t]* ACMS" $FILENAME | grep -vc "\$DOMAINSOLVER"
This will discard records having $DOMAINSOLVER. Franklin52 solution below looks better.

Maybe something like this?

grep -c '^[^$]*DOMAINSOLVER[ \t]*ACMS' file
