Hi,

i am new with unix commands and now i have a big problem...

i tried to compress a directory with subdirectorys and .jpg files with the command "tar -c fotos/". During the command was running i killed the command with "kill -9 xxxx". Now all the files in the directorys have the ending .gz.

Who can help me to figure this out (to undo) because the fotos cannot be viewed anymore. :-(

And it would be also fine to give me a tip howto compress a directory with subdirectories anf files.

I hope i didn't demaged some fotos while i killed the process during the compression.

I fixed my problem with "gunzip -r fotos/"
But i am not sure if i can damaged files when i kill the command during the compression.

To tar, I'd have used the command (assuming GNU tar here, and also assuming you've cd'd into your target directory)

Code:

tar cvzf myarchive.tar.gz *

Or, two distinct commands

Code:

tar cvf myarchive.tar; gzip myarchive.tar  # gzip will automatically add the .gz extension
