AWK

Hi,

The code below selects errors (ORA-/Corrupt) in a first field of alert.log file and outputs error along with time stamp which is a previous line.
Code:
awk '/.........[0-9][0-9]:[0-9][0-9]:[0-9][0-9] ....$/ {TM=$0}
    {if ( $1 ~ /ORA-/ || $1 ~ /Corrupt/) { print TM,$0 }}'  alert.log

My Question is - how can I modify the code to select ORA- or may be other type of errors encountered in other fields of the line. i.e $2..$n . The n number is unknown

Thanks

Look for ORA- in the whole record?
Code:
if( $0 ~ /ORA-/  || $0 ~ /Corrupt/) ...........

IS that what you mean?

Hi

Would it be possible to make the search generic. What I mean is to replace search pattern
$0 ~ /ORA-/ || $0 ~ /Corrupt/ with variable say $SEARCH_ERRORS. Say I define SEARCH_ERRORS=" $0 ~ /ORA-/ || $0 ~ /Corrupt/ || $2 ~ /WAITED/" etc..
I did try but it seems doesn't work correctly. Is the other alternative to achieve this

Thanks!

you can pass a variable to awk:
Code:
myVar=ORA-
awk -v "err=$myVar" '$0~err'

mirni, I think he wants to pass some awk code in

This should do it
Code:
SEARCH_ERRORS='$0 ~ /ORA-/ || $0 ~ /Corrupt/ || $2 ~ /WAITED/'
awk '/.........[0-9][0-9]:[0-9][0-9]:[0-9][0-9] ....$/ {TM=$0}
{if ('"$SEARCH_ERRORS"') { print TM,$0 }}' alert.log

Thanks appreciate you assistance! , Yes, you are right I am passing code. It have not work so far. It look like it interprets $0/$1/etc .. as a module's parameter and not awk's

Code:
Wed Mar 16 13:37:12 CST 2011 --- send_notification()
awk: cmd. line:1:     {if ( modules/mod_AlertLog.ksh ~ /ORA-/ || ~ /Corrupt/ ||  ~ /WAITED/ ) { print TM,$0 }}
awk: cmd. line:1: ^ syntax error
awk: cmd. line:1:     {if ( modules/mod_AlertLog.ksh ~ /ORA-/ || ~ /Corrupt/ ||  ~ /WAITED/ ) { print TM,$0 }}
awk: cmd. line:1: ^ syntax error
awk: cmd. line:1:     {if ( modules/mod_AlertLog.ksh ~ /ORA-/ || ~ /Corrupt/ ||  ~ /WAITED/ ) { print TM,$0 }}
awk: cmd. line:1: ^ syntax error
