Help!

I'm trying this command but keep getting illegal syntax etc.

Code:

awk '{ sub(/00012345/,"000123456"); print}' >newfile

I don't understand. It works on one unix machine but not another!

Where's the input file?

The syntax is valid. Use nawk or /usr/xpg4/bin/awk on Solaris.

Yes the exact command works on one of the aix machines but not another!
Any obvious reason for this?
Could the file type have any bearing on whether awk works or not?

I don't see how the "exact command" can work on any machine, since awk would be reading from standard input using that "exact command". Unless of course, somewhere in your script you used exec to change it to read from a file?

What are the version of AIX that it does and does not work on?

Show the output on both systems, of:

Thanks for your help with this one but I've probably wasted your time.
Not sure why but for some reason I went down the AIX track when in fact the system is Sun Solaris...
