My solution worked with both n and N, since I did not need to use the \n.

With the first a new line is read into the buffer space. Since there is not -n option the first line gets printed and then replaces by the second line. Of this second line the last character gets replaced and then the second line gets printed and a new round starts.

If I would have used the second option, the second line gets appended. Of these two lines combined (with \n in the middle) the last character gets replaced and then both lines get printed and a new round starts.

Both options work differently but have the same result. In your case you need the \n so the first option would not work...
