When you N in sed not at $, you get two lines in the buffer, and the division between them is '\n', which is usable in regex except [] but not output except embedded in \1 or the like, not literally.
This merges every even line to the odd line before, where the linefeed becomes a space:
The following inserts a line Haha between odd and even lines. Note that to select linefeeds in the buffer you use \n but to make linefeeds you use \^J :
Now, if you have 1-4 Xxxxx: headings in any order, the boundary is just before any repeats. This sed just collects a bunch of lines until there is a duplicate:, replacing the linefeeds with tabs (shown as ^I since I cannot tab here) for the interim so the block is a line, at least for sed regex engines where '\<' is still good for 'at beginning of line or other word boundary'. narrative: print if this is the last line; get next line, if the next line starts with a Something_99_Xx: that is already in the buffer, write out the first line and discard it; turn any linefeed into a tab and branch back to the :loop tag:
You can precede, augment or follow this with code to restore the linefeeds or consolidate the linefeed-folded sections. However, I find it is better to not blend a "looping N sed" and a "simple filtering or modifying sed", just pipe one to the next.
I never N at $ = EOF, as many sed versions discard data then. A looping N sed script should accomodate $ gracefully!

I have two files (A and B) and want to combine them to one by always taking 10 rows from file A and subsequently 6 lines from file B. This process shall be repeated 40 times (file A = 400 lines; file B = 240 lines).
Does anybody have an idea how to do that using perl, awk or sed?... (6 Replies)
