This is The BEST sort command I have ever seen for this task.

Code:
du -sk ./* | sort -n | awk 'BEGIN{ pref[1]="K"; pref[2]="M"; pref[3]="G";} { total = total + $1; x = $1; y = 1; while( x > 1024 ) { x = (x + 1023)/1024; y++; } printf("%g%s\t%s\n",int(x*10)/10,pref[y],$2); } END { y = 1; while( total > 1024 ) { total = (total + 1023)/1024; y++; } printf("Total: %g%s\n",int(total*10)/10,pref[y]); }'

Output:
Code:
4K	./Desktop
6.3M	./Pictures
266.3M	./Documents
6.1G	./Music
Total: 6.4G

What is all of that doing?

How about just doing:

Code:
du -sk * | sort -n

and then if you want to see some of your output in human readable format just do:

Code:
du -sh <dir>

But it isn't all automatic like the above unfortunately. I've always wished there was a sort option, like ls so you could combine it with -h
