Using sed w/variables containing "\"

I'm trying to perform a search and replace on a variable that could potentially contain a \. For example:

#!/bin/ksh

VAR1=$1

VAR2=`printf "$VAR1\n" | sed 's/\\\/--REPLACED--/g'`

The problem I am running into is the printf is treating the \ as an escape to the character following it and not as a literal \. I do not have the option to change the input to the script (to \\). Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joel

You can try this:

Code:
printf '%s\n' "hi there"
printf '%s\n' $VAR

to "hide" that backslash

Suggestion: adding two new groups "sed" and "awk"

Majority of the questions are pertaining file/string parsing w.r.t sed or awk It would be nice to have these two as their own sub category under shell-programming-scripting which can avoid lot of duplicate posts. (1 Reply)
