@anbu23
I have a script in which my requirement is i need to start and application (script file) which logs a sentence in log file. After i issue -- application.sh start -- command it takes few minites to completly start the application and once the application is up it logs a sentence. Is der a way so that i will wait until it is done and verify the log file for the required sentence (log) to go to next step in the script.

@anbu23 thank you.

My search string is "DEBUG [com.arjuna.ats.jta.logging.loggerI18N] [com.arjuna.ats.internal.jta.recovery.info.secondpass] Local XARecoveryModule - second pass" . when i grep {grep -i "search string" logfile} its returning nothing though the file has the line init. I wonder is there any limitation on length of the string or number of characters that we can grep for....

Try:
Code:
grep -iF "search string" logfile

You have special characters in your search string. You need to escape it.

Code:
DEBUG \[com.arjuna.ats.jta.logging.loggerI18N\] \[com.arjuna.ats.internal.jta.recovery.info.secondpass\] Local XARecoveryModule - second pass

Even dot is a special character. You need to escape it.

In addition to anbu's solution, I would suggest a sleep statement, otherwise you'll drain a CPU core...
Code:
application.sh start
until grep -qiF "search_str" log_file
do
  sleep 1
done
