SFTP and /dev/stdin

Trying to automate an sftp script, we have
Code:
sftp user@server <<EOF
lcd /var/tmp
cd remotedir
put TESTFILE
bye
EOF

This appears to do everything except actually put the TESTFILE on the remote server.
However this...
Code:
sftp -B /dev/stdin user@server <<EOF
lcd /var/tmp
cd remotedir
put TESTFILE
bye
EOF

works fine. I understood that the -B option (Solaris 10) is supposed to be the name of a batch file, so what's the /dev/stdin bit doing?

-B /dev/stdin treats the stdin file descriptor as if it were a real file - which /dev/stdin actually is. In other words by using a here document you are creating a set of commands in a file -- /dev/stdin -- a set of commands in a file == a batch file
