I have a csv file which contains data that I need turn into variables.

I can do this, but the csv file has data which I do not want and this is causing me problems.

The csv file is like this.

data1 ( hostname ) ,data2 ( country ) ,data3 ( IP) ,data4 ( OS)

All I want is the data1, data2, data3 and data4 and not the bits in the brackets, but I do not knwo how to do this.


when I run awk:

awk 'BEGIN {FS=","}{print $1}' mycsvfile

I get:

data1 ( hostname )

Can anybody suggest how I can only get the data1 I want and not the whole string.

You can use below command:
sed 's/( *[a-z]* *[A-Z]* *)//g' mycsvfile

with just a little bit adjustment:

sed 's/ ( *[a-z]* *[A-Z]* *) *//g' INFILE

gives

data1,data2,data3,data4

sed "s/ *([^)]*) *//g" infile
