Which database are you talking about?

If it is Oracle, you can use something like:

echo "SELECT TO_CHAR(SYSDATE, 'YYYYMMDD HH24:MI:SS') DATE_NOW FROM DUAL;\nEXIT\n" | sqlplus -S -L <User>/<Pass>@${ORACLE_SID}
