need help in string patterns

Hi,

i have a directory /u02.i have 2 files in it like abc1.gz abc2.gz i want to store file pattern in a variable like

Code:
 
f1="abc?"

i don't want to take .gz in variable rather i want .gz appended when i need to unzip the file like

Code:
 
gunzip $f1[.gz]

Can you please help me how to accomplish this work.i don't want to store .gz in the variable

Try this,

gunzip $f1.gz

thanks for helpful reply. but to do if i have to append options like .gz or .Z?

Something like this.

f1="abc?"
gunzip $f1.*[Zz]
