Problem with awk script
Hi,

I have one csv file with 3 fileds like

tmp1.csv
Code:
2079|2010Aug|cardilogy
2349|2010Aug|numerology
2213|2010Aug|immunlogy

another csv file with code for those specialities

spec.csv
Code:
cardiology|CRD
numerology|NMY
immunology|IMY

i want to replace the contents of file 1 with codes in file2 ...i tried by using below code

test1.sh

awk -F"|" 'NR==FNR{a[$1]=$2;next} NR!=FNR{if($3 in a) $3=a[k]}1' $2 $1

main.sh
Code:
sh test1.sh tmp1.csv spec.csv >tmp2.txt
mv tmp2.txt tmp1.txt

i wanted my code directly to replace the values in tmp1.txt and remaining fileds shud be as it is

hi rdcwayx,

i'm to doing the thing same thing but actually my data consists of huge data with somany columns and records....is it feasible to create a new file all the time and rename ..

instead is there any other way to just to replace the description filed in tmp1.csv with the code in spec.csv directly..

i'm relatively new to shell scripting.....
