Help with ls command

Help with ls command
HI,

i have many files in /u03 directory. i want to store some patterns in a variable and use them to ls files in /u03 directory.
this works fine

Code:
cat=CAT_*00?????
ls /u03/$cat|wc -l
255

if i use the pattern directly i got the result
Code:
ls /u03/CAT_*(00|01)?????
360

or
Code:
cat="CAT_*00????? CAT_*00?????"
ls /u03/$cat
360

But it don't work
Code:
cat=CAT_*(00|01)?????
ls /u03/$cat|wc -l
CAT_*(00,01)?????: No such file or directory

So please help me

Try find

find /u03 -name "CAT_*[00|01]?????"
