gunzip with out messages

Hi all,

Code:
tar cvPf - /data/test | gzip > /data/backups/test.gz

i am running th above command when i execute it giving a big list of files that in test which it is tarring..on the terminal....
is der nay way to do it silently ..... like with out getting those messages on the terminal.....

Hi.

You could always just remove the v option from the tar command?

Does anyone know what kind of impact gunzip -c or gzcat has on a system? I am using gunzip -c on files that around 30 Mb compressed and 300Mb uncompressed. How much memory or disk space gets used?
