how to save error messages
hi all,

I want to copy a file into itself

-bash-3.00$ cp lsfile lsfile

cp: lsfile and lsfile are identical

i got such error messages ..

i want to save that error messages into a separate file..Is it possible..

First, you cannot copy a file to itself. If you want to supress the error message from trying to do such a thing and save those errors to another file use:
Code:
cp lsfile lsfile 2>>error_messages

This will take stdout and redirect it to the file of your choice, in this case error_messages
