"if" statement grouping

Hi
I work in ksh88.
I am trying to group a few conditional statements to check for the value of the variable DATE, but getting a syntax error:

Code:
$DATE=1836
$[if [[ $DATE -ge 1700 ]] && [[ $DATE -le 2359 ]]]   ||   [if [[ $DATE -ge 0001 ]] && [[ $DATE -le 0900 ]]]; then
ksh: syntax error: `]]]' unexpected

is there a way to user "OR" between first part:
Code:
 if [[ $DATE -ge 1700 ]] && [[ $DATE -le 2359 ]]

and a second part:
Code:
 if [[ $DATE -ge 0001 ]] && [[ $DATE -le 0900 ]]

Thanks a lot for any advice -A

Hi.

A bit simpler would be:
Code:
if [ $DATE -ge 1700 -a $DATE -le 2359 -o $DATE -ge 0001 -a $DATE -le 0900 ]; then
 ....

Thanks a lot. It worked. I have never seen -a or -o operands. Can you plz tell me how they work?

-o is the or operator, -a is the and operator.

You can read all about it in the test(1) man page.

Code:
       condition1 -a condition2    True  if both condition1 and condition2 are
                   true. The -a binary primary is left asso-
                   ciative and has higher precedence than the
                   -o binary primary.

       condition1 -o condition2    True if either condition1 or condition2  is
                   true. The -o binary primary is left asso-
                   ciative.
