if-then with awk

Hi, what I'm trying to do is to read a couple of fields from a file with awk and if the conditions are met asign a value to a variable:

Code:
awk '{if ($1 == "xx" && $2 == "yy") VARIABLE="zz" }' file

I'm a little bit lost on how to make this work. Can anyone point me to the right direction?

Thanks.

This worked
Code:
VARIABLE=$(awk '{if ($1 == "xx" && $2 == "yy")print "zz";}' file)

To make this a little bit complicated I did this:
Code:
VARIABLE=$(awk '{
if ($25 == "12" && $26== "1")
	print "19";
else if ($25 == "17" && $26== "51")
	print "23";
else if ($25 == "71" && $26== "52")
	print "24";
else if ($25 == "12" && $26== "114")
	print "22";
else if ($25 == "71" && $26== "111")
	print "16";
else if ($25 == "17" && $26== "108")
	print "26";
else if ($25 == "71" && $26== "112")
	print "18";
else if ($25 == "17" && $26== "117")
	print "29";
else if ($25 == "31" && $26== "1")
	print "35";
else if ($25 == "19" && $26== "107")
	print "79";
else if ($25 == "13" && $26== "0")
	print "39";
else print "No matching rule";
}' file)
echo $VARIABLE

However I always get "No matching rule", despite the fact that $25 == "17" && $26== "108" is met.
What am I doing wrong?

This has been a very good self-learning night!

Code:
VARIABLE=$(awk -F, '{if ($25 == "12" && $26== "1")
	print "19";
else if ($25 == "17" && $26== "51")
	print "23";
else if ($25 == "71" && $26== "52")
	print "24";
else if ($25 == "12" && $26== "114")
	print "22";
else if ($25 == "71" && $26== "111")
	print "16";
else if ($25 == "17" && $26== "108")
	print "26";
else if ($25 == "71" && $26== "112")
	print "18";
else if ($25 == "17" && $26== "117")
	print "29";
else if ($25 == "31" && $26== "1")
	print "35";
else if ($25 == "19" && $26== "107")
	print "79";
else if ($25 == "13" && $26== "0")
	print "39";
else print "No matching rule";}' file)
echo $VARIABLE

I recreated a sample file and your code worked. Likely you forget to specify field separator. Default field separator (FS) is white space. You can specify as awk -F ":" or awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"} ....' if your separator is colon (Smilie, for example
