Use of variable

Code:
sort -k2 tmp.tsv |  sed -n '/\[6\/Jul\/2010:06:00:00/,/\[7\/Jul\/2010:09:00:00/p' > tab.tsv

If I use the hard coded values it works fine.

How to use the variable in place of date.

value of var1='6/Jul/2010'
var2='7/Jul/2010'
i.e sort -k2 tmp.tsv | sed -n '/\[$var1:06:00:00/,/\[$var2:09:00:00/p' > tab.tsv

abd I also get the error as
sed: -e expression #1, char 1: unknown command: `''

Try:
Code:
var1='6\/Jul\/2010'
var2='7\/Jul\/2010'
sed -n "/\[$var1:06:00:00/,/\[$var2:09:00:00/p"

var1='6\/Jul\/2010'
var2='7\/Jul\/2010'

var1='6/Jul/2010'
How to make it '6\/Jul\/2010'
Please tell me how to escape the "\" in shell script.

sandy, I do not understand your question. What would you like to do? How and where do these variables get set? Can you show that part of the script?

Code:
DATE=`./get_date.pl 3 date`
DATE1=`./get_date.pl 2 date`

The variable DATE and DATE1 will print ' 6/Jul/2010' and ' 7/Jul/2010' assuming current date is '9/Jul/2010'

The below part of the code will remove the space.
Code:
var1=$( echo "$DATE" | sed "s/ //g" )
var2=$( echo "$DATE1" | sed "s/ //g" )

So $var1 and $var is 6/Jul/2010 and '7/Jul/2010'

So the variables should be escaped for slash.

In the input file,

I have to sort the column 2, and use the sed to select the range.

sort -k2 tmp.tsv | sed -n "/\[$var1:06:00:00/,/\[$var2:09:00:00/p" > tab.tsv

So how to escape the slash in $var1 and $var2 so that i can use it in sed command.

So else I get an error.

You could use:
Code:
var=$( echo "$DATE" | sed -e 's| ||g' -e 's|/|\\/|g' )

But you might want to have a look at your other thread, because this approach may not provide what you seek.

Also, if you can show us the "get_date.pl", you could directly get the formatted string (in case no other scripts using the current format but the one shown above)

the other side, if you having GNU date, probably do don't even need to call an external script (perl) to get the previous day's dates more easily.
