Question Tar and gunzip piping
I am using IRIX 6.5.11 and tcsh. I have created an arcihive by using the command "tar -cvf - /stuff/ /more/stuff|gzip --best>/stuff.tar.gz"

It made an archive of my files without taking up huge amounts of disk space with uncompressed files.

How do I extract files from the archive without uncompressing the gzipped archive?

I tried using "gunzip stuff.tar.gz|tar -xvf -" but the archive starts to uncompress and take up huge amounts of diskspace.

I would like to avoid the solution of "install gnu tar which supports compression." Which in my particular situation would be inconvenient.

Is is possible to extract files from the archive through STDIN and STDOUT like I did in creating the compressed archive?

Perhaps you could use gunzip -c

Thank you for looking beyond my ineptness to look at the gunzip man page and send a reply. The gunzip -c option was exactly what I needed.
