awk to produce zip commands

Hi,

I have a list of files which I want to rename and zipped up. The zip file will be split into small files when it contains 500 renamed file.

Currently the way i am doing is like this.
Code:
  1. Get the filenames of the files in a list
  2. Generate another list containing the target filenames of the renamed files. This is generated from list 1
  3. List 1 and list 2 is pasted together to get a third list
  4. The 3rd list is the input to awk to generate cp, zip and rm commands

This is what I have for the awk command.

Code:
awk "BEGIN{OFS=\"\";fn=$mydate;p=0}{if(NR%$zipsize==1){p++;}print \"cp \",\$1,\" \",\$2,\"; zip \",fn,\"usg\",p,\" \",\$2,\"; rm \", \$2,\";\"}" $templist >>
 $commandfile;

Where zipsize = 500, myfate is a date stamp in the zip file. templist contains the third list mentioned above.

I find this way of packaging is taking a long time. I think it is related to me using zip in a per file basis.

Anyone can give me any suggestions on how to improve the throughput of the zip process mentioned above?
