I have an additional question.
using awk, how can I extract the beginning and end of the log ?

beginning of the log
<marker1>
part of the log I'm interessed in
<marker2>
rest of the log


I tried manipulating
awk '/^<marker2>/{p=0}p;/^<marker1>/{p=1}' infile

but did not manage

Hi, you could e.g. do it like this:
Beginning:
Code:
awk '/^<marker1>/{p=1}!p' infile

End:
Code:
awk 'p;/^<marker2>/{p=1}' infile

Or Sed:

Beginning:
Code:
sed '/^<marker1>/,$d' infile

End:
Code:
sed '1,/^<marker2>/d' infile

Beginning + End:
Code:
sed '/^<marker1>/,/^<marker2>/d' infile
