Catch error from SFTP session

We have script running to SFTP some file to the remote server. The problem is the SFTP transfer returns an exit code of 0 even if there is permission error during file transfer, connection refuse (like when sftp server is down), thus, returning the status of the script as success.

I was thinking to output the result of the SFTP to one file then catch the error from there by grepping the known error like "Permission denied". One problem can I think of using this is I wont know all the error that we might encounter during SFTP that will still return a 0 exit code.

Is there any other way to do the error checking? This is impacting our scheduled process and we will only know that the the script errored when the client complained that the file was not transferred to the remote server.

Any help is appreciated.

try to redirect standard error

great! i havent thought of that. I think that is easier instead of redirecting all to a file and check for any error.

Thanks a lot Smilie

I redirect the standard error to the file and i was able to catch the errors. However i also want to see the errors on the screen? Is there any way to do it? I mean is it possible if I can see the standard output and standard error on the screen, at the same time send the standard error to a file?
