I have been trying to do a simple task of extracting 2 fields from the file (3 rows) and store it in an array variable. I tried with:

I have a single line file like this :
Average Fragmentation Quotient : 3.084121
Now I want to store the value which comes after ":" i,e 3.084121 into a variable.
And if this variable crosses above 6 i want to call another script...

I want to check whether the file has header or not
The header will contain the string

command is -

I have the results of a grep with -n store in a shell variable
ie
VAR=`grep -n -e 'PATTERN' file`
How ever I am missing the line breaks in the variable , How do I store the resualts of grep with many lines in to a variables. I want the varable should be the sawmway as we do the grep
